Treat With Respect: President Kovind Reminds IRS Officers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hon\u2019ble President Kovind took a subtle dig at the elite IRS Officers for treating taxpayers with contempt and behaving in a high-handed manner with them. <\/p>\n<h2> Income-tax dept is a service provider <\/h2>\n<p>\u201c<em>Tax payer is your partner, not your adversary,<\/em>\u201d the Hon\u2019ble President said, echoing the words of several Courts which have repeatedly passed strictures against the department for adopting strong arm techniques with taxpayers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>You have a policy and regulatory role, but you are principally a service provider. Please be sensitive to the demands and dignity of the person \u2013 the honest tax payer \u2013 who is coming to you for a service,<\/em>\u201d the President added. <\/p>\n<p>He also advised the Income-tax department that while India&#8217;s tax to GDP ratio needs to improve, it has to be done &#8220;<em>by persuasion<\/em>&#8221; and not &#8220;<em>by intrusion<\/em>&#8220;. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tax payer is your partner, not your adversary. However, he referred to this as an \u201c<em>aberration<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The Learned President said that \u201c<em>Honesty is a given<\/em>\u201d and should be \u201c<em>written into the DNA of the Revenue Service<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that despite these \u201c<em>aberrations<\/em>\u201d, common people still have great expectations from the IRS officers and other public servants.  <\/p>\n<p>He also referred to the IRS as \u201c<em>front line soldiers in the battle against black money<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>He noted that the Government has put in place various steps to eradicate or at least minimise the curse of black money. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Honesty is a given.
