Full Court reference of Late Adv. Hiro Rai, Past President of the Income-tax Appellate Tribunal Bar Association

A full court reference of Late Adv. Hiro Thakur Raichandani was held on July 11, 2024 (Thursday) at 10 AM in Courtroom number 1 of the Income-tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).

The reference was attended by the Late Hiro Rai’s wife, daughter, two brothers, The Honourable Mr Justice C V Bhadang, President of the ITAT, Hourbale members of the ITAT, President of the ITAT Bar Association – Mumbai (Bar), Past Presidents ,Vice-Presidents of the Bar, Officer bearers, Senior Advocates, Advocates, Chartered Accountants and Departmental representatives.

The President of the ITAT, Hon’ble Mr Justice C V Bhadang, spoke about the late lawyer’s academic qualifications and the chambers in which he was stabled. Honourable President praised the Past President of the Bar Late Mr. Hiro Rai   for his legal practice, academic interest and integrity. He also mentioned that the late Hiro Rai had mentored several juniors. He revisited a case where the Late lawyer argued before him, wherein he was courteous, clear on facts and well-articulated.

The President of the Bar, Shri. Prous Kaka, Senior Advocate, mentioned that the untimely passing of Late Shri Hiro Rai has brought profound sadness. He mentioned that he was a beacon of excellence and mentioned the landmark case of Red Chillies and Manjula Shah which was argued by him. He also highlighted the late Lawyer’s impeachable integrity and how he stood by the institution. He remembered his friend, Hiro Rai’s interest in music and films. He recollected a phone call in April where Mr. Hiro Rai mentioned that he would resume work in a couple of months. He also mentioned that it was the late Lawyer who asked him to take this role as President of the bar and that the Tribunal had lost a leading lawyer and his legacy would carry on.

Mr. Ankush Kapoor Commissioner of Income-tax & Departmental representative, spoke about the late Lawyer’s contribution to the tax fraternity and society. He spoke about his contribution in an array of cases ranging from international tax, Transfer Pricing and movie stars like Shahrukh Khan.

Hon’ble  Mr . Justice  C V Bhadang requested everyone present in the room to maintain two minutes of silence in honour of Late Adv. Hiro Rai.
