Hon’ble Justice Mr. Dhiraj Singh Thakur,

Chief Justice Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Hon’ble Justice Mr. Dhiraj Singh Thakur was designated as Senior Advocate in 2011 by the Hon’ble High Court of Jammu and Kashmir. His Lordship also served as a standing counsel of the Tax Department before his elevation as a Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in the year 2013. His Lordship was transferred to the Bombay High Court on June 10, 2022.

Hon’ble Justice Mr. Dhiraj Singh Thakur was elevated as Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in July 2023. His Lordship is one of the finest judges and is admired by the Tax Bar.  Hon’ble Justice Mr. Justice D.S. Thakur, Chief Justice Andhra Pradesh High Court was given a warm farewell at the Library of the ITAT Bar Association – Mumbai, on July 26, 2023, on the occasion of his long overdue elevation as the Chief Justice of the Hon’ble Andhra Pradesh High Court.

 

 

 

 

The President of ITAT Bar Association Mumbai, Mr. Porus Kaka, Senior Advocate commended that Justice D.S. Thakur was one of the few justices who has left a jurisdiction without an unkind word from anyone. Furthermore, Mr. Kaka described Justice D.S. Thakur as a person who embodied both the unwavering firmness of a judge and the true demeanor of a gentleman.

Hon’ble Mr. G S Pannu, President of the Income-tax Appellate Tribunal, specifically travelled to Mumbai to attend this function and mentioned that this was his first interaction with his Lordship, However, he was acquainted with his lordship’s judicial acumen through the various decisions rendered by the tax bench of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court.

Praising the Mumbai ITAT Tax Bar, Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur lauded them as a highly dignified group of lawyers who have consistently upheld the values of honesty and integrity in their interactions with the bench. During the farewell ceremony, Justice D.S. Thakur fondly recalled the amusing story of how he was assigned to the tax bench in the Bombay High Court. With a touch of humour, his lordship shared the tale of how he unexpectedly found himself taking on this role, adding a lighthearted moment to the occasion. During the farewell event, Senior Advocate Dr. K. Shivram highlighted Justice D.S. Thakur’s judicial approach and which had come across nearly 85 reported tax judgments by the tax bench of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court headed by Justice D.S. Thakur, and what stood out was that a majority of these cases saw appearances made by young lawyers. This practice exemplified Justice D.S. Thakur’s commitment to providing opportunities to young and aspiring legal professionals, reflecting his belief in nurturing and supporting the next generation of legal talent. It is a testament to his dedication to fostering a vibrant legal ecosystem and encouraging the growth of young advocates.
